J.E.T.S, JETS, JETS, JETS!
On April 20th another example of the local upturn in the Cortland economy made national news as the New York Jets National Football League Franchise chose SUNY Cortland as its host for a portion of the 2009 training camp. SUNY Cortland was ultimately selected over Utica College, Cornell University and Marist College for the combination of facilities and the environment that local community provides.
At the official press conference Governor David Patterson said, “Bringing the Jets to Cortland will generate much needed revenue for Central New York at a time when our State faces an unprecedented fiscal crisis. More economic activity translates into more jobs and more opportunities for the people of this region.” Historic downtown Cortland, the traditional tourist destination of the community will welcome the New York Jets and their fans to exciting cultural events, unique shopping and fine dining. Jets banners and flags will denote Cortland as the new hometown of the franchise and welcome visitors to explore the district as they shop for official team merchandise and sample exclusive epicurean delights. For a comprehensive list of the businesses downtown and all summer events visit the newly launched www.cortlanddowntown.com website.
Visitors to the community will be able to attend the New York Jets team practices, shop for official Jets merchandise and enjoy the interactive Jets Fest activities from July 31st through August 21st. There is no charge for admission to attend training camp, and on-site $5 parking is available. More information including a complete calendar is available at www.newyorkjets.com. Be sure to check their site throughout the camp for up-to-date accurate information, including practice times and schedules.
